Report: German foreign minister spent 11,000 euros on styling in December

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) apparently spends a five-figure sum per month on hairdressers and make-up artists. As Bild (Saturday edition) reports, citing the federal government's response to a CDU inquiry, Baerbock's styling cost taxpayers a total of 11,900 euros in November 2023.

Berlin - In December it was 11,305 euros. Baerbock's expenses thus clearly exceed those of other cabinet members: in December 2023, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) billed a total of 3,141.60 euros for hairdressers and stylists. Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) received 2,677.50 euros, and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) 541.45 euros. Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) and Federal Construction Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) each charged 300 euros in December. Christoph Ploß, a CDU member of the Bundestag, has criticized the expenses and called for a cap on the cost of haircuts.

Ploß told Bild: "If hard-working taxpayers have to spend five-figure sums every month for Annalena Baerbock's hairstyle, then the fun stops. We need an upper limit for the hairdressing and cosmetics expenses of the federal ministries". Of course, in principle it is legitimate for the state to pay for the representation of prominent officials. "But the fact that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock alone spends more than 11,000 euros a month on hairdressers or makeup artists is an abuse and clearly too much."
