Hong Kong lawmakers reject same-sex partnerships bill

Hong Kong lawmakers rejected on Wednesday a government bill that would have granted limited rights to same-sex couples whose unions are registered abroad, dealing a major blow to the city’s LGBTQ community.

A majority of the 89-member Legislative Council voted against the Registration of Same-sex Partnerships Bill, which the government proposed in response to a 2023 top court ruling that ordered the creation of a legal framework for LGBTQ couples.
