Witnesses described a sudden wall of sludge rather than a rising monsoon river. Environmental historian Ruth Gamble of La Trobe University called the rush of mud and debris “like an inland tsunami,” saying it travelled nearly 170 kilometres south into Nepal.

Omkar Joshi, a 35-year-old Nepali customs agent rescued from a hilltop in Timure, told AFP: “Everything is finished. It is a giant graveyard. All that is left are sand and pebbles, soaked red by human blood.”

Chinese footage from Gyirong Port showed a several-storey surge of mud striking a border complex as people ran. State media described the scene as a “mudslide disaster,” with sludge more than 1.5 metres deep in places and some road sections deeper still.

The death toll and the missing

Figures moved through Thursday as teams reached more ground and recovered bodies carried into the plains.

Nepali police said they had recovered 359 bodies. Another 910 people were listed out of contact inside Nepal, including 517 foreign tourists, according to the tourism board and police briefings compiled by AFP, Reuters and Al Jazeera. Beijing said about 100 Chinese citizens were missing in Nepal.

On the Chinese side, state media reported three dead at Gyirong Port and 558 missing, including 260 foreigners. Those two national tallies should not be added as if they were fully independent; some travellers may be counted on both sides of a chaotic border crossing.

Early Nepali official comments pointed to a tremor that might have shaken ice loose. The USGS first published a magnitude 4.4 event north of Kathmandu, near the border.

Reports spoke of roughly 40 kilometres of highway damage and dozens of bridges lost, which is why crews are still walking through sludge rather than driving into every settlement.

In Tibet, Chinese state media said nearly 800 emergency workers, sniffer dogs and speed boats were mobilised. Premier Li Qiang visited the area on Thursday to oversee rescue and relief, according to official accounts. Foreign journalists still have very limited access to the Tibet Autonomous Region, so independent verification of conditions on that side of the line is thin.
